About Flinders - Nottinghamshire & beyond
Details of those included on the 1939 Register for England and Wales, taken in September of that year in preparation for WW2, are included if they were born pre 1922. Those born 1922 and later have their details redacted on the 1939 Register unless they are known to have died subsequently.

At www.flinders.nz (copy and paste this link into your browser) is to be found other general Flinders information, including census entries 1841 - 1911, the 1939 register, for England, Wales, Scotland, Canada to 1921, and 1850 - 1940 for the USA.

See the names index below this introduction message. If you make any changes you MUST advise site administrator Keith Flinders otherwise they will be lost next time the site is updated. PLEASE make sure that you add names to any images you upload.

The database includes records for families collected from various parish registers, census returns, civil indexes, as well as family submitted data. The information has been compiled as a guide only, so that others may find such records then ensure that the relationships recorded here are totally accurate. Corrections, comments, as well as additions, are always welcome.

County borders and county names in England and Wales are those before the 1974 changes, NOT changed them to reflect the present.
Included are descendants of the Flinders family who were in the Carlton and Gedling areas of Nottinghamshire from the early 1500s, perhaps earlier. Gedling parish records start in the mid 1550s. Also detailed are Flinders and related families who moved to other areas of England, plus those who emigrated to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Southern Africa, USA and elsewhere.  The family of Capt. Matthew Flinders RN 1774 - 1814 is included, but there is some doubt as to if his great, great, great grandparents are actually those recorded here. His forebear John, and John's father, also John, went to Donington, Lincolnshire circa 1699. According to Capt. Matthew they were from Ruddington (south of Nottingham)and indeed a few Flinders records are to be found there, but this family became Quakers so records for that period are unlikely to be found. Further research needed.

Acknowledgements: Bob Pearson formerly of Littleborough, Lancs, now of Melbourne, Australia, John Flinders and Wendy Flinders, of Nottingham, Terry Flinders of Swindon, William Highley, sisters Donna (deceased) & Melba (nee Jones), the late John Flinders of Sutton Coldfield, for their invaluable input and assistance with costs.

Note: Many references for people in England from July 1837 have been taken from General Register Office indexes, hence many dates are registration quarters, and some place names are those of registration districts. Often only the purchase of certificates will provide the correct information where census information is not also available.
